Lying in a job interview

A job applicant has always doubts about telling the complete truth or telling some lies, in order to hide the real truth. Before facing the interview, you have to be clear in your head what do you want to say, if you’d rather tell the truth or tell some lies, in order to improve the truth. It’s important to have these ideas clear in your head, because if doubts appears in the interview, most probably the interviewer may notice that you are nervous, and you wouldn’t transmit enough confidence.

The most recommended way to do the interview is telling the truth, because you will feel more comfortable, you can respond to their questions without any doubts, you would be secure of everything, and in conclusion you would feel better about yourself. Everyone would like to have a better CV, more experience and also be the ideal employee, but of course you have to earn it.

Telling the whole truth is the best way to do it, however, sometimes your truth makes it complicated to get the position and it means losing the position to a better qualified candidate.

On the other hand, there are people that chose the way of telling some lies, that isn’t recommended. It isn’t a big problem if you hide some of the truth, but the problem is when you make up your CV, in order to be the ideal candidate. Because lying about your degree, qualifications or experience for short-term gain, inevitably will come back to haunt you. Moreover the truth can come out when the employer talks to your references.

If you lie in an interview process and don’t get caught, you might think that all is done and you are free. However, you’ll face an even more serious consequence than just losing a job offer, probably you wouldn’t be recommended in other jobs.

The most common lie is to say that you weren’t really fired from your last job but instead resigned voluntarily. And to check it’s very easy, just calling your previous company.

So the best way to face and interview job, is telling the truth, point out your strengths and being who you are, not trying to be someone that you aren’t, because when you are false the company most probably will realize.

If you know that you have few probabilities to get the job, but still apply, use even the few probabilities you have to do your best, and I recommend not lying, just hiding the truth, because it would be better for you.

How to build a work team

Most of the people in a company talk about work teams, being part of one of them or how to create them. But just a few know how to create a competitive work team or how to develop them. It is more important than it looks like. The success of your company will also depend of your work teams because nowadays most of the companies’ work is done by teams and not by individual persons.

The first thing that you have to know when it comes to create a work team are the individual strengths of the people, in order to make them assume the role that fits the most with them. You have to create a team with people with different abilities that complement each other. You will not have an efficient team if their role doesn’t let them give the most of themselves. Also, when the team is done, you have to give them freedom to work as they want, respecting some rules, of course, but also you have to let them solve their own problems by themselves. Don’t try to control everything, let them act.

You also have to let them know that you have their back, that you trust them, that you support them. It will help them to keep working hard and moving forward with confidence. A good way to show them that you trust them and let them do their work is asking for feedback (not just between your work team but also to other people). It’s not good to wait until there’s a problem to stop and wonder if there is anything wrong or if something can be better.

The next step is to set the goals that the team has to achieve. You cannot start working if you don’t know where you want to go. A good thing to motivate your co-workers and to help them to achieve their goals is to provide incentives, specially those which consist in days off or holidays rather than those which consist in money.

Last but not least, remember to give rewards and to celebrate the success when you reach it. The rewards will keep your team motivated and it will help them to reach the goals of the team. Also, it is always good to celebrate your success. The rewards and the celebration will also help to cross the line between just a work team and friendship. It is really important to get well along with your co-workers, it will make it easier to work and to cover your friend’s back.

How to be more efficient at work

The first thing that you have to take care of, when it comes to become more efficient, is your lifestyle. If you want to be more efficient you should start by having a healthy life, meaning sleep the right amount of hours per day, in order to be well rested and able to give your best in the office, exercise in order to clear your mind, motivate yourself and plan your own goals, in order to see how you advance. It will make you have a good mood and face your daily work in a better way.

The second aspect you have to keep in mind is what you want to achieve. When you are in the office, first of all, you have to schedule everything that you have to do both in a short and a long term. When you have a list of the tasks that have to be done, reorder them according to the priority that you want to give. After having done your list, you have to be sure that you have all the tools that you need to do your job properly, you also have to tidy your workplace. If your workplace is not tidy, you will waste a lot of time searching what specific tool you need, thus you should have the tools that you use the most, near you and the rest of them should be in their place. If you do that, every time that you need to use something, you will know exactly where it is and you will save time.

Furthermore, it is very important to do small breaks in order to not get frustrated. The breaks will help you rest your mind, but be careful, too many breaks may reduce your productivity. Also, what is important to keep in mind is that you should avoid anything that may distract you from your work, as the mobile phone or your personal email. During the working hours you should stay focused to your work and not take care of any personal business. Wait until you are finished with your daily work to make personal phone calls or send private emails.

The third and last thing that can help you to become more efficient at work, is related to how you do your job. You have to know how to separate what is important and what is not. Try to delegate all those little things that you have to do but are not related to your main goal. They will just waste your time and at the end of the day you will not have time for the real important work. You can also delegate some work that has to be done, but is not that important. Remember, also, to split your biggest responsibilities in small pieces in order to be able to focus exactly in what has to be done and to have the better possible result. Last but not least, try to have the best relation possible with your co workers and don’t bring to the office the trouble that you may have out of it.

How to do an English CV

When you’re applying for a job in an English company, the first thing they will ask you is your CV. You might make a mistake if you give them the CV you’ve already given for jobs in another country. English companies have different guidelines when it comes to the CV than other countries.

First of all, you should write your name, address, telephone number and Email Address on it. Just write it, don’t announce what you are writing (Name: John Smith). After that, you should write your Personal Profile, with a maximum of 5 lines, where you have to define yourself without using the words “I”, “me”, “my”, etc. Some keywords you could use are, for example, adaptable, multilingual, confident, enthusiastic, positive mental attitude, team player, among others. English people evaluate a lot if you speak more than one language, so if you are multilingual, this is the right place to write it. After the Personal Profile, you should write, at maximum, six Key Skills. You can also use keywords, but make sure that they are different than the ones you have already used for your Personal Profile. It is a good time to write more qualities that you have and that you didn’t write in your Personal Profile.

Once you’ve defined yourself, it’s time to write about your academic training, starting with your employment history (starting with most recent). After your professional experience, it’s time to write about your education and any extra study you have followed, starting one again with the most recent.

When you have finished with your professional experience, you should write a little about your personal life, namely your hobbies and interests, something that shows that you don’t live just for your work, but that you have a life beyond it.

Finally, you should add some references, which is a way to relate what you have done before and what you want to do. For example, a reference could be a letter written by an employer you have had in which your skills are emphasized. It can be really useful for it shows how you work and how happy they have been with the work you used to do.

Remember that it should not exceed two pages.

Why is traveling around the world good

Most of us are lazy when it comes to travelling. Everyone wants to travel, to visit amazing places, beautiful sights, but how many of you said a Saturday evening with some friends and holding a beer in your hand to make a trip? I’m sure that most of you did. How many of you actually prepared that trip? How many of you tried to transform that brilliant idea into a reality? It is really expensive, someone said. I don’t have time, said another one. I don’t know the language, replied a third one. All those excuses mean the same: I am really comfortable at home, it is a great idea, but I won’t be the one who prepares it.

In a few years you will all regret that you didn’t make those trips come true. It is said that people regret most the things that they didn’t do, than the ones they actually did, and a trip around the world is a perfect example of it. We are losing the opportunities of having amazing adventures with our friends, new experiences.

Why should you travel? First of all, because it is easier than you think. It is not that hard to plan the route, because there are many websites that can help you to prepare your trip, which can advise you about the places to visit or the accommodation to stay. You will meet incredible people, people you wouldn’t have met from your sofa, nice people who will help you for no reason, because at the beginning of their trip they were in the same position as you are now, people who will become really important in your lives and people who visit all around the world. You will eat some food that you didn’t know existed and you will taste new flavours that you will love. You will learn languages, almost basic words like hello, thank you or maybe how to introduce yourself; you will discover skills that you have and you didn’t realize, you will have to become creative, you will have to know how to use your limited resources in order to do everything you wanted. You will learn things that are not taught at school, you will learn new perspectives of life, how do foreign people live, new habits or traditions that are really different from the ones that you are used to, and cool stories to explain, some of them will be so amazing that it will look like brought out from fiction movies; an opportunity to become closer to your friends, because it is said that your friends know all of your stories, but your best friends were by your side while living them; and you will realize how lucky you are because you come from nice houses in where you always have food in the fridge and a roof over your head. You will do things you never imagined you could do, experience feelings you had never experienced before. You will see animals and vegetables you only watched on National Geographic channel or much better, you didn’t even know they existed.

But the main problem while doing a trip like this is always the same, the money. Of course you have to earn some money to do it, but it is cheaper than you think, because what you will learn, can’t be measured by money.

So my advise is to forget all the reasons why it won’t work and believe the one reason why it will.

Mistakes to avoid in a job interview

Bad first impression

Even if your interviewer doesn’t want to, he/she will think in one way or another depending on your first impression, meaning how you dress or your hair, among others.

How you dress is more important than most of people think. You should dress in the same way that you would dress if you were going to work in that company a regular day, thus you should not dress casual if that company has a dress code which business formal. You have to look professional to your interviewer.

Another fact that will create a bad first impression in your interviewer’s eyes is coming in with food, drinks and of course chewing gums. It doesn’t look professional and also it increase the possibilities to spill it.

Lying

Sooner or later they will know if you are lying. You will not get the job and also, you will gain a bad reputation. Even in the case you get hired, that will be the reason why they will fire you. It is not hard to get when someone lies, specially because we cannot remember the lies always. If you say the truth you don’t have to remember anything, just say how things are. The best way to get a job is being how you really are.

Use your phone during the interview

It is really rude and it also means that you don’t care about the job, that you give priority to the person in the other side of the phone rather than the interviewer. Even if it sounds weird, this is one of the most common mistakes that people do during the interviews.

Haven’t done any research

You have to be prepared for some questions, specially those related to the company you are applying for. You should do some research about the company before going to the interview because they ask questions about themselves really often to know if you are really interested in working in that company.

Show that you don’t work well with a team

It is good if you show your abilities and rewards that you have obtained in your latest works, but don’t speak always about you as a single person, try to emphasize also the work you have done with a team. Nowadays most of the work in the companies is done by more than one person, if you just show how good you are working alone, you may not be the person they are looking for.

Ask about holidays or money when it’s not the time

These are relevant facts, but don’t ask them at the beginning, wait until the interviewer starts discussing it, it will look like you are not interested in the company but in the money. You have to show them that you want to work there and you want to improve not just yourself but also the company, and bringing out the money in the conversation will not help you.

How to prepare for a job interview

When you land an interview for a job you have been longing for a long time, it is therefore normal to be anxious. Here are some tips to help you get your dream job.

First, collect information about the company.
Many people do not bother researching information about their potential future company, which means that a simple way to stand out from the majority of the people is to search on the Internet for the company’s activity, its goals and achievements, its directors’ names, its market share as well as its news. Furthermore, with this information you can predict your employer’s expectations more efficiently and then proceed to the second step.

Prepare the questions
Once you are done with the first part, you can now try to prepare the famous strengths and weaknesses question; and this is why predicting your employer’s expectations can be quite important, as he will often be looking for a specific profile. Write down a few strengths and weaknesses you find relevant for the position and the company you apply and drill until you sound natural and convincing. Also, you should prepare at least one or two examples for each of your statement as the recruiter is likely to ask for more precision as well as examples from your previous jobs. Maybe you can ask one of your acquaintances to play the role of the recruiter.
Another important point is to prepare a few questions you will ask the employer. It shows that you have a certain knowledge of the company through researches and will make your employer think that you are self-motivated.
Obviously, an employer is looking for someone capable of improving the company, so it is important that you come up with a few additional qualities of yours which are likely to improve it, keeping in mind that it must suit the company’s profile and aims.

Salary
Your employer may or may not talk about your income. If he does not talk about it, then you NEED to do it, which means that you have to study the average wages for this job and prepare a spread to be sure you will not earn less than the minimum you expected.

Last heads-up
An important thing is to never ever ever criticise your previous companies, as it would reveal that you are not faithful nor involved in your enterprises.
Moreover, try to dress appropriately. This should be quite easy to find out.
Before going to the job interview, make sure you have a pouch containing some CVs, a jotter, some pens and a dose of relevant humour.

Do not forget to arrive 5-10 minutes in advance; try to appear serious, motivated and confident, and exercise your handshake if possible.
Good luck!

What our handshake reveals about us

During an interview, be it for an internship or a real job, the employer will employ many tactics to determine whether you are fit for the position – and the handshake is the very first of them. It can reveal more about your personality than you might think. There are several types of handshakes:

The Bone Crusher
The Bone Crusher squeezes your hand firmly – too firmly. There is a message of power and intimidation behind the grip. When you shake hands with the Bone Crusher, don’t feel tempted to start a hand-squeezing contest. However, present yourself with strength during the interview, because the Bone Crusher usually also expects self-confidence and determination in his applicants.

The Dead Fish
This is a limp and indifferent handshake that feels like shaking a dead fish rather than a hand. Persons with this handshake might have a passive or reserved personality and are generally not people-focused. What matters to them is the technical or mechanical aspect of something. With this handshake, you symbolically give the other person the “upper hand”. In business, you want to be considered an equal, so avoid this handshake if possible.

The Politician
The other person grabs your hand like in a normal handshake, but his other hand covers yours or is placed on your forearm or shoulder. This “double-hander” handshake tries to communicate that the two of you have a strong, trustworthy relationship. However, this close human contact can be inappropriate in many business situations. Think of the Politician as a mini-hug. Would it be appropriate to give the other person a short hug? If no, avoid giving them a “double-hander” handshake.

The Finger Vice
The Finger Vice grabs only your fingers instead of your whole hand. It is meant to keep you at a distance, be it out of insecurity or to demonstrate personal power. The Finger Vice is often looking for partners that are compliant and willing to look for compromises instead of people that seek open confrontation.

The perfect handshake is firm, not too hard and definitely not too soft. It lasts for 2-3 seconds and you should make eye contact the whole time. Sweaty hands are a normal body reaction when you are anxious or nervous but undesirable in a job interview, so make sure to wipe them dry before you shake hands with your future employer. Most importantly, however: do not forget to smile!
